 The LDJ A-Maize-ing Heat boiler is not a daily maintenance item.  Other free-standing biomass units need daily attention, including cleaning out of the fire chamber and loading fuel.  With our direct feed system, your hopper can hold up to a week’s supply of fuel, depending upon the size of area you are heating and the outside temperatures. 

Loading Fuel

When you are filling the hopper at the beginning of each season, add 3 tablespoons of graphite to keep the feed augers lubricated.  You may also add one tablespoon to a full hopper once a month.  Make sure your fuel is free of dust, dirt and debris.

Lighting Your Unit

Once you have fuel in the hopper, you can place your fuel directly into the burn pot.  Fill the burn pot with your fuel up to the top set of air holes.  After this step, place either wood pellets or kindling wood and paper on top of the fuel in the burn pot.  Gelled fire starter is recommended as a lighting agent or accelerant to help start the fire.  Next, light the fuel in the burn pot.  Once you have an even fire across the top of the burn pot, move the START/OFF/ON switch to the START position.  This will start your combustion blower only.  The augers will begin to feed once the low limit switch on the unit has been satisfied, typically within 10-15 minutes. Once you have a solid burn, you can then switch to the ON mode.   

Ash Removal

Each boiler contains 15 verticle flue tubes.  It is recommended that you clean these tubes once every four weeks, or as needed, with the flue brush provided with the boiler.  Access to the tubes is through the inspection plate located at the top of the boiler on the front side.  Cleaning the tubes will remove any fine ash buildup and help keep your unit running efficiently. Typically, you will empty the ash pan once a week.  This could be more or less often, depending on the amount of fuel you are consuming.  Your ash should be placed in a non-combustible container as a precaution against hot coals.  Once the ash is cool, it can be disposed of in the trash, or possibly as a garden fertilizer.

Yearly Maintenance

At the end of the season, LDJ recommends you thoroughly clean the burn pot and the inside of the burn chamber.  This includes running all of the fuel out of the hopper and the auger system.  The fuel can acquire moisture which could jam the system upon restart. 

Exhaust System 

Also inspect your exhaust system.  Open the cleanout on your chimney and clean out any fly ash or debris that may have collected.  It may be necessary to have a chimney sweep inspect your chimney.  It is always best to contact a professional to get a recommendation on how to properly keep your chimney clean.
